SMBC Group is Japan's second-largest banking group and a global systemically important bank, parent of Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corporation, SMBC Trust Bank and SMBC Nikko Securities. It operates in more than 40 countries and is one of the largest project finance lenders in the world. In September 2025 it acquired 24.2 percent of India's YES BANK, paying 134.8 billion Indian rupee for the first 20 percent and 28.5 billion rupee for the further 4.2 percent. SMFG put those amounts at about 240 billion and 51 billion yen, using the 1 INR = 1.80 JPY rate quoted in its own release. It bought another 0.7 percent in October 2025 and held 24.9 percent at 31 March 2026, and it owns 98.5 percent of PT Bank SMBC Indonesia. The group reported a record profit for the year to March 2026 and targets net income of 1.7 trillion yen for fiscal 2026. It is piloting stablecoin issuance with Ava Labs, Fireblocks and TIS and plans a joint yen stablecoin with MUFG and Mizuho.
