Northwestern Mutual is the marketing name of The Northwestern Mutual Life Insurance Company, a mutual life insurer in Milwaukee. Its own legal page describes the parent as selling life and disability insurance, annuities and life insurance with long term care benefits, and it is not a bank. One subsidiary, Northwestern Mutual Wealth Management Company, does hold a federal savings bank charter and provides investment advisory and trust services, and the same page states plainly that those investment products and trust services are not insured by the FDIC and are not deposits or other obligations of that company or its affiliates. The group reported total assets of $399.0 billion, total surplus of $33.4 billion and revenue of $41.2 billion for 2025 on the Wisconsin statutory basis. It publishes no business bank account, no payment rail and no card, so a company cannot bank with it in any sense the word usually carries.
